The game begins when Edward Carnby, a paranormal investigator and main character, is taken to the roof to be killed. The guard is killed by an unknown force. The 3 take a car from the parking lot and head out into the city, only to find the same chaos they left behind in the building. After escaping an apocalyptic earthquake with giant fissures following them down the street, they crash-land in Central Park. There, Theophile tells them that he doesn't have the strength to continue. And he gives the stone to Edward and tells him and Sarah to see it at the museum. Theophile then commits suicide.
